ALBERT AUGUSTINE Concert Classical Guitar Strings
| Albert Augustine is credited with making the first truly good classical guitar strings for Andres Segovia (photo) in 1947, using war surplus nylon. Since then his guitar string design became the model for a new generation of strings, with ever growing technical advances, but holding on to the qualities that made them good enough for Segovia. Today's AUGUSTINE STRINGS are designed to give you endless possibilities for finding the best string to suit you needs. Augustine offers distinctive combination of bass and treble strings to suit the sensitivity of particular guitar, or the preferences of the guitarist. Augustine's selections can be matched to the needs of the artist or luthier to produce the appropriate mix of bass or treble volume and response to complement the character of the instrument or piece of music. The right selection will make any classical guitar come to life. |

Breaking the Code. Augustine strings are different from other brands, but once you understand how Augustine strings are identified, it's easy to select the bass and treble combination that's right for you. The secret is to realize there are thee types of bass strings and three types of trebles to consider. It's how these bass and treble string types are combined into sets that make Augustine strings stand out form the crowd.
Bass strings are identified by color names, to distinguish their particular string density. We offer string sets with BLACK, RED, and BLUE bass strings. Black basses are the lightest, Red basses are slightly heavier, and Blue bases are the heaviest. The heavier the bass string, the stronger the response and volume. All are wound with copper, for a deep and rich bass tone.
Treble strings are identified by tension class and the names Classic, Imperial, and Regal.
Each has its own unique sound qualities.
- Classic trebles have the lowest tension and are the original nylon classical string Albert Augustine created for Andres Segovia in 1947. They were an instant success with Segovia, and played an important part in the growing popularity of classical guitar in the United States. The new generation of classical and concert guitarists found the Augustine Classics allowed them to recreate the Segovia sound.
- Imperial treble strings are made with a modern polymer and designed for medium tension, just a little higher tension than Classics, for a responsive action and feel.
- Regal trebles are also made with the new and unique polymer, but are designed for the highest tension.
Light, medium, or heavy bass strings are mixed with low, medium, or high tension treble strings to create the distinctive Augustine string set designations. Each set has its own voice and playing characteristics.
It's a matter of deciding if you want more or less bass, and more or less treble. Varying the bass and treble string tensions allows tailoring of the resulting tone to match the instrument or musician's preference.
